Autumn 100 Years Ago It's interesting to look back 100 years to LEYC's 1909 regatta, then also in the autumn. That season a new fleet of Lough Erne One Designs had arrived and took the names and place of the previous Coleen fleet (of which some or all had been sold to Lough Neagh YC). Three years earlier the new Enniskillen Yacht Club had brought its Fairy fleet to Lower Lough Erne.
In 1909 the two fleets raced together from Rossclare line, on a handicap calculated from a practice race. It was very windy from the north, with both fleets reefed on a course twice round buoys at Devar (sic) Inishmacsaint and Strahenny (near our present day Rossfad mark). The LEODs were the faster on run and reach, and both similar upwind. On the 16 mile course, the five LEOD gave 8m 6s to the seven Fairies. Edward Saunderson's LEOD Ocean Spark won with Captain Irvine's Fairy Storm second. EM Archdale's Spook, today's Maeve, was last among the Fairies, but beat Lady Hugh Grosvenor's LEOD, last to finish. There is an interesting photograph in LEYC bar of the LEODs on a train for the journey to Fermanagh. The 1909 pictures with this 2009 autumn regatta preview show an LEOD start at Crom (off Inisherk towards Trial Bay) and an LEOD on moorings, showing similarities to the present day Yeoman, likewise recently arrived and well established at today's LEYC. The LEODs were sold away after the Great War to Strangford Lough, and raced there as a fleet until well after the Second World War. One, Sonia, is displayed at the Cultra museum. There is a stong case for Sonia, or another LEOD to be restored, brought home to Fermanagh, and displayed or sailed at today's LEYC. Michael Clarke, LEYC Historian.
