News > J/24 Event Dates - UPDATE

Created: 11/8/2009 10:53:21 AM, Updated: 11/17/2009 11:53:49 AM

Click to view photograph in full scale.August 7 & 8 are the 2010 dates set by Lough Erne YC to the J/24 Association for the Northern J/24 Championship. Ireland hosts European and World J/24 events in 2011 and 2013.

Other news broken at November 2009's AGM of the International J/24 Association of Ireland, chaired by re-elected President, Robin Eagleson, an LEYC member, included dates 19 & 20 June for the 2010 Western J/24 Championship at Lough Ree YC.

There is no Autumn J/24 Championship in 2010, an event often hosted by LEYC in recent years. Carrickfergus SC has offfered a Spring J/24 Event in May, which may happen depending on sufficient boats committed.

Ireland's 31st National Championship will be defended by Lough Erne YC’s Mickey McCaldin and his Murder Picture team, on the weekend 11 & 12 September at Howth YC. This Club will also host the 2011 European and, pending World Council confirmation, the 2013 World J/24 Championship.

Meantime, next season's 2010 European J/24 event is in Holland, 4-11 June, and the World Championship in Sweden, 13 - 20 August.

Bringing these two big events back to Ireland is a major achievement for Robin Eagleson, Irish J/24 President. Previous European championships here were in 1985, 1995 and 2002, and World 1990. LEYC was well represented by boats and sailors at all of these international events, afloat and ashore.

Many J/24 crew, and most J/24s at LEYC have sailed in international events here and abroad. Tim Rippey's Jigalo won the 2005 Worlds with a US Virgin Island's helm, with Murder Picture in close pursuit, until a broken rudder put her out of the penuiltimate day's racing. This top crew won the next day's final race. Mickey was with them again in Australia for a third place in the 2006 Worlds.

Six boats, indeed the entire then active Erne fleet competed in Dublin Bay's 2002 European J/24 Championship, Skipjack (Jog), Jeriatrix, Jasper, Virjin, Jet and Jurassic. and then from other clubs Mejoolie and Luder Two.

The picture shows Robin Eagleson's red Luder Two and Michael Clarke's Jeriatrix with her women helm Anne Marie Shewfelt, cockpit Sandra Dillon, mast Olivia Cosgrove, foredeck, Judie Anderson, and male owner ballast.

These J/24 women won the trophy for best Westerly boat - half the fleet of over 50 boats. It was the only international trophy ever brought back to Lough Erne YC until Tim Rippey came home three years later with his World J/24 Champion crew trophy. Here's looking forward to trophies brought home to LEYC from the big national and international J/24 events ahead in 2010, 2011 and 2013.
